Taxonomic notes
Acccording to Silva et al. (1996: 159), the name Gracilaria furcellata has been misapplied to this species by Harvey (1963: xxxiv, pl. CCLXXXVI); the name Gracilaria confervoides has been misapplied to this species by Harvey (1863: xxxiv) and the name Gracilaria fruticosa has been misapplied to this species by Harvey (1855b: 551 (in part, excluding type) and Harvey (1863: xxxiv (in part, excluding type)) - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Womersley (1996: 18) cites G. cliftonii Withell , Millar & Kraft 1994 as a synonym of G. ramulosa. He considers that the renaming of G. furcellata was unnecessary in view of the variation in habit which encompasses G. ramulosa J. Agardh. According to Silva et al. (1996:159), G. ramulosa J. Agardh is a later homonym, being antedated by G. ramulosa (Martius) Greville.
