Acccording to Silva et al. (1996: 159), the name Gracilaria furcellata has been misapplied to this species by Harvey (1963: xxxiv, pl. CCLXXXVI); the name Gracilaria confervoides has been misapplied to this species by Harvey (1863: xxxiv) and the name Gracilaria fruticosa has been misapplied to this species by Harvey (1855b: 551 (in part, excluding type) and Harvey (1863: xxxiv (in part, excluding type))
Womersley (1996: 18) cites G. cliftonii Withell , Millar & Kraft 1994 as a synonym of G. ramulosa. He considers that the renaming of G. furcellata was unnecessary in view of the variation in habit which encompasses G. ramulosa J. Agardh. According to Silva et al. (1996:159), G. ramulosa J. Agardh is a later homonym, being antedated by G. ramulosa (Martius) Greville. Gracilaria ramullosa (Martius) Greville 1833; some doubt about citation of basionym (Shaerococcus ramullosus) Martius 1828 (Index Nominum Algarum). - (20 Feb 2009) - Wendy Guiry
