This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Phoracis.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Grateloupia filicina (J.V.Lamouroux) C.Agardh.

Type locality: Italy: Sicily ; (INA 1996) Type: Rafinesque; marine; (INA 1996) Notes: According to Dixon (1959: 350), Rafinesque's herbarium and library were lost in the shipwreck of the 'Union of Malta' off Fisher's Island, Connecticut, on November 2nd. 1815.

Adjective (Latin), fern-like (Stearn 1983).
