Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), truncate, i.e., ending very abruptly as if cut straight across (Stearn 1985).
Laurencia truncata Kützing 1865
Osmundea truncata is a distinct species, morphologically separate from O. oederi (Gunnerus) G.Furnari; for a detailed discussion of this see Nam, Maggs, McIvor & Stanhope (2000, as "Osmundea ramossima"); see also notes under O. oederi here. Guiry (1997) cites Laurencia platycephala sensu Magne as a synonym of this species, but many specimens passing under this name can be O. oederi.
This is the species to which most Mediterranean records of Laurencia pinnatifida (or Osmundea pinnatifida) must be referred; see papers of Furnari & Serio (1993) and Nam, Maggs, McIvor & Stanhope (2000).
This is a marine species.
