Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gyrodinium is Gyrodinium spirale (Bergh) Kofoid & Swezy.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Barrufeta resplendens (Hulburt) H.Gu, Z.Luo & K.N.Mertens.
