Type locality: Culebra Island, Puerto Rico; (Woelkerling 1998: 302) Holotype: M.A. Howe No. 4373; 7.iii.1906; on reef near low water mark; NY; 945452 Notes: Isotypes: PC, Howe 4373, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym); BM, algal box collection 899; NY (Woelkerling, 1993: 28); TRH A27-1565: Howe no. 4373, including slides 1085, 1086 and two unnumbered slides. At low-water mark on a coral reef at Flamingo Bay, Culebra Island, Puerto Rico (INA).

Taxonomic note
Gabrielson et al. (2018), based on DNA sequencing of type material, showed that: 1) P. antillarum was distinct from P. onkodes, where it had been placed in synonymy by Maneveldt & Keats (2014), based on morpho-anatomy and 2) that P. antillarum and P. pachydermum were conspecific with the basionym of P. antillarum, Lithophyllum antillarum Foslie & M.Howe having priority over P. pachydermum. - (23 February 2019) - M.D. Guiry
