Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Palatinus apiculatus var. laevis (Huitfeldt-Kaas) S.C.Craveiro, A.J.Calado, Daugbjerg & Moestrup.

Adjective (Latin), smooth, free from uneveness, hairs or roughness (Stearn 1973).
