The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Peridinium bipes F.Stein.

Nomenclatural note
Often attributed to "(Ehrenberg) Claparède & Lachmann" based supposedly on Glenodinium tabulatum Ehrenberg, 1837 which is a new combination (although the basionym was not cited) of Peridinium tabulatum; see cards in INA. Moestrup & Calado (2018: 272) note, "... the synonymy between P. tabulatum and P. bipes has been noted by Lefèvre (1932, p. 114-116), who, however, retained the latter name. We have confirmed Lefèvre's conclusions in Ehrenberg's collection of mica preparations kept at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin (Lazarus & Jahn 1998). The consistent and well-defined use of the name P. bipes contrasts with the erratic use of the name P. tabulatum, which was applied to almost any freshwater peridinioid with visible plates until its redefinition by Stein (1883). We are retaining the use of P. bipes pending its conservation against P. tabulatum, to be proposed elsewhere." - (01 October 2014) - M.D. Guiry
