Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Peridinium is Peridinium cinctum (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Fusiperidinium wisconsinense (Eddy) F.M.G.McCarthy, H.F.Gu, K.N.Mertens & Carbonell-Moore.
Type Information
Syntype localities: "This species was found abundantly in the plankton of Oconomowoc in Wisconsin in August, 1927. It was associated with Glenodinium Peridinium cinctum and Ceratium hirundinella. Also found abundantly plankton of Lake Nokomis at Minneapolis, Minnesota." [USA]; (Eddy 1930: 301)
