Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Euglena is Euglena viridis (O.F.Müller) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Euglena gracilis f. hiemalis (Matvienko) T.G.Popova.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), pertaining to winter, also "hyemalis" (Stearn 1973).
