Nomenclatural notes
The specific epithet is often spelled "coeruleus" but C. Agardh (1824: 122) used "Conferva caerulea". The epithet refers to a particular blue colour. Cerulean blue is a cerulean (light blue or azure) pigment used in artistic painting, also derived from the same Latin word. Montagne (1846) used the spelling "caerulaeus". - (14 June 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Yoon et al. cite this as C. coeruleus. - (28 September 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic note
Necchi et al. (2013) conclude there is only a single monospecific genus worldwide and that species is correctly called C. caeruleus, since this is the oldest validly published name; all other previously described species of Compsopogon and Compsopogonopsis are synonyms. - (27 August 2013) - G.M. Guiry
