The type species (holotype) of the genus Zygnema is Zygnema cruciatum (Vaucher) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spirogyra decimina var. elongata (Vaucher) Petlovany.

Syntype localities: "the neighbourhood of Cheshunt, and in ponds at the back of the Norland estate, Notting Hill." [England]; (Hassall 1842: 39)
