Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Spirogyra is Spirogyra porticalis (O.F.Müller) Dumortier.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Spirogyra decimina var. elongata (Vaucher) Petlovany

Syntype localities: "the neighbourhood of Cheshunt, and in ponds at the back of the Norland estate, Notting Hill." [England] (Hassall 1842: 39).
