Description
Description: Young vegetative cells, when solitary, spherical, 5-10 µm in diameter; found singly or in small masses embedded in an extracellular mucilage. Chloroplast cup-shaped, filling ½ to entire cell; one pyrenoid (more rarely 2) with entire hull. Cell wall thin, becoming flattened between adjacent cells growing in a mass. Mature cells remain green and reach 12 µm in diameter.. The formation of mucilaginous stalks forming Hormotila-like colonies in older cultures was reported in the originally description of this species. This characteristic was observed by us only when cultures were grown on Bolds minimal medium (BMM) supplemented with acetate. No carotenoid pigment was detected in cells grown on BMM. Zoospore production was copious in 3-5 day cultures on BMM. Naked zoospores were 3.2-4µm wide by 6-12µm long with 2 apical flagella of equal length and a parietal chloroplast with one posterior pyrenoid; two contractile vacuoles and a nucleus were located anteriorly.

Habitat
