Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hypnea is Hypnea musciformis (Wulfen) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Bahia State, Brazil "in litore maris prope Bahian" (Jesus et al. 2016: 784). (Dawson 1961: 235). Notes: Type: Syntypes of Chamisso, Martius, Benzon, Liebmann and Telfair are in the Agardh Herbarium, Lund, Sweden. Type Locality: Not specifically designated. Syntypes are cited by Agardh from Brazil, West indies, Atlantic Mexico, Mauritius. Lectotype ( in LD) is herb. Ag. 33878, Sphaerococcus spinellus var. laxior, "In litore maris prope Bahian, legit et misit Martius" (Haroun et Prud'homme van Reine (1993: 122).
