Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Melobesia is Melobesia membranacea (Esper) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphithallia crassiuscula (Kützing) Athanasiadis.
Type Information
Type locality: "Cap. — An Gelidium cartilagineum." [Cape of Good Hope, South Africa]; (Kützing 1843: 386) Holotype: collector not indicated; date not indicated; L; 939.6-146 (Woelkerling 1998: 370) Notes: Athanasiadis (2019: [2]) attempted to designated a lectotype from "herbarium sheet L4081310 (barcode L0491448) placed in folder BE.1847238 (and also including three slides deposited here) [in L]. The lectotype is a gametophyte attached to G[elidium] capense (S. Gmelin) P.C. Silva, from the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, no date, no collector (herb. Kützing)." However, in accordance with Art. 8.2, sheet L4081310 represents a single gathering and is automatically the holotype as indicated by Woelkerling (1998: 370). Holotype fragments: PC, unnumbered, Montagne Herbarium (in the bound volume Types d'Algues recues de Monsieur Kützing de Nordhausen en Juin 1846).
