This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Hummia.

Type information
Type locality: "Ad Galveston (Texas)" [USA] (Kützing 1849: 547). Notes: Fiore (1975: 497) remarked "Though the type of Ectocarpus onustus was lost during World War II, Kuckuck's accurate illustrations of plants from the type specimen leave no doubt as to the identity of the species. Kuckuck's illustrations are more accurate than those of Kiitzing (1855) and are designated as the neotype of the species.". The type material is surely in Kützing's herbarium at L and the neotypification may be superfluous.
