The type species (lectotype) of the genus Valonia is Valonia aegagropila C.Agardh.

Lectotype locality: Guadeloupe, French Antilles (Olsen & West 1988: 104). Lectotype : Duchassaing No. 73; LD (Olsen & West 1988: 104).

Origin of species name
Adjective A (Latin), swollen, especially on one side (Stearn 1985).
