Type locality: California [probably Monterey Bay] (Harvey 1833: 163). Lectotype: TCD 0012370 (Bruce & Saunders 2016 '2017': 45).

Adjective (Latin), resembling the mosses, specifically the genus Hypnum (Neal 1993).
