Taxonomic notes
Replaced name: Gracilaria furcellata (Montagne)Harvey 1863:286; Gracilaria furcellata Harvey 1863 sensu J. Agardh 1876: 419 (Withall et al. 1994: 285). - (20 February 2009) - G.M. Guiry
Silva et al. (1996: 159) note: "Gracilaria furcellata J. Agardh is based on material described and illustrated by Harvey (1863: pl. CCLXXXVI) but misidentified as G. furcellata (Montagne) Zanardini (Plocaria furcellata Montagne), a taxonomic synonym of Sarconema filiforme (Sonder) Kylin. Because J. Agardh's circumscription excluded the type of Plocaria furcellata, which he transferred to Dicranema, he is considered to have published a new species bearing a name that is a later homonym (art. 48.1)." - (20 February 2009) - G.M. Guiry
Withell et al (1994: 288) note that May (1948) considered G. ramulosa J.Agardh (1876) to be a form of G. cliftonii (as G. furcellata). Womersley (1996:180 cites G. furcellata Harvey 1863: pl. 286 as a synonym of G. ramulosa J. Agardh 1876. - (20 February 2009) - G.M. Guiry
