Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Gil-Rodríguez, M.C. & Haroun, R. (2002). Vegetative and reproductive phenology of Chondrophycus perforatus and Laurencia viridis (Rhodomelaceae, Rhodophyta) in Tenerife, Canary Islands. Constancea 83.20: .

Description: A parasite causing pulvinate outgrowth on host consisting of monosiphonous parasite filaments and enlarged host cells. Emerging from pulvinate outgrowth are short polysiphonous filaments with 4-6 pericentral cells; apical cells of erect filaments soon lose their activity and identity. Pericentral cells divide by transverse and longitudinal-tangential divisions and subsequent transverse divisions in gametophytes, but not in tetrasporophytes, resulting in tiers of cells, the lowermost in pit-connection with the central cell. Trichoblasts not formed; upright axes unbranched. Reproductive structures formed on upright branches. Tetrasporangial branchlets with 6 pericentral cells, each producing a tetrasporangium; sporangial initials cut off before cover cell initials which form 2-3 cover cells. Segment producing procarp forms 6 pericentral cells, the 5th being fertile (Morrill 1976) but 4 may be produced in some specimens (Yendo 1913). Procarps borne directly on main axis, comprised of 4-celled carpogonial branch and 1-2 sterile groups attached to the supporting cell; 1-3 procarps per axis, but only a single cystocarp matures. Cystocarps ovoid and without an ostiole. Male axes with 4-6 pericentral cells; spermatangia produced directly on pericentral cells.

Comments: On Chondria and Laurencia, known only in Japan.

Numbers of names and species: There is only one species or infraspecific name in the database at present, which has been flagged as accepted taxonomically on the basis of the listed literature under the species name. In some instances, opinions on taxonomic validity differ from author to author and users are encouraged to form their own opinion. AlgaeBase is a work in progress and should not be regarded as a definitive source only as a guide to the literature..

Names: ('C' indicates a name that is accepted taxonomically; 'S' a homotypic or heterotypic synonym; 'U' indicates a name of uncertain taxonomic status, but which has been subjected to some verification nomenclaturally; 'P' indicates a preliminary AlgaeBase entry that has not been subjected to any kind of verification. Verification of data

Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
