Holotype species: Drouetia coalescens (Farlow) G.De Toni

Original publication and holotype designation: De Toni, G. (1938). A note on phycological nomenclature. Rhodora 40: 27 only.

Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Gender: This genus name is currently treated as feminine.

Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Saunders, G.W., Lane, C.E., Schneider, C.W. & Kraft, G.T. (2006). Unraveling the Asteromenia peltata species complex with clarification of the genera Halichrysis and Drouetia (Rhodymeniaceae, Rhodophyta). Canadian Journal of Botany 84: 1581-1607, 83 figs, 3 tables.

Nomenclatural notes
Drouetia is a substitute name for Herpophyllon Farlow (1902: 97), which is treated as a homonym (see Art. 53.3) of Herpophyllum, a name applied by J. Agardh (1894b: 62) to a genus of Rhodophyceae of uncertain position (Kylin, 1956: 558-559). - (7 Jul 2006) - Wendy Guiry

Taxonomic notes
Saunders et al. (2006) presented convincing morphological and tetrasporangial evidence to support the reinstatement of Drouetia as a distinct genus, rather than being a synonym of Halichrysis as proposed by Norris and Millar in Norris (1991). In their synoptic review of red algal genera, Schneider & Wynne (2007) follow Saunders et al. (2006) in treating both genera as current. - (12 Jun 2012) - M.D. Guiry

Numbers of names and species: There are 5 species names in the database at present, of which 4 have been flagged as accepted taxonomically on the basis of the listed literature under the species name. In some instances, opinions on taxonomic validity differ from author to author and users are encouraged to form their own opinion. AlgaeBase is a work in progress and should not be regarded as a definitive source only as a guide to the literature..

Names: ('C' indicates a name that is accepted taxonomically; 'S' a homotypic or heterotypic synonym; 'U' indicates a name of uncertain taxonomic status, but which has been subjected to some verification nomenclaturally; 'P' indicates a preliminary AlgaeBase entry that has not been subjected to any kind of verification.
