Taxonomic status: This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Choreonema.
Most recent taxonomic treatment adopted: Kylin, H. (1956). Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen. pp. i-xv, 1-673, 458 figs. Lund: C.W.K. Gleerups.
Comments: Woelkerling (1987) concluded from a study of relevant type specimens that the type species of Chaetolithon Foslie (1898), namely Chaetolithon deformans,was conspecific with the type species of Choreonema Schmitz (1889), namely Choreonema thuretii. Consequently, Chaetolithon Foslie (1898) is considered to be a heterotypic synonym of Choreonema Schmitz (1889). In addition, Chaetolithon deformans (Solms-Laubach) Foslie, first described as Melobesia deformans Solms-Laubach (1881: 53, 57), is considered to be heterotypic synonym of Choreonema thuretii (Bornet) Schmitz, first described as Melobesia thuretii Bornet in Thuret & Bornet (1878: 96).
