Nomenclatural notes
The ICBN rules cited below are those adopted by the Seventeenth International Botanical Congress, Vienna, Austria, July 2005 (McNeill et al. 2006).

In accordance with ICBN Art. 13.3, the name Chaetolithon is treated as pertaining to a non-fossil taxon because its type is based on a non-fossil specimen. No species based on fossil types have been assigned to the genus.

The generic name Chaetolithon is typified (ICBN Art 10.1) by the type of C. deformans, the only species originally included in the genus. - (28 Aug 2009) -

Description: No description is currently provided as the name is in synonymy.

Information kindly contributed by Wm. J. Woelkerling but may now be outdated.

Comments: Woelkerling (1987) concluded from a study of relevant type specimens that the type species of Chaetolithon Foslie (1898), namely Chaetolithon deformans, was conspecific with the type species of Choreonema Schmitz (1889), namely Choreonema thuretii. Consequently, Chaetolithon Foslie (1898) is considered to be a heterotypic synonym of Choreonema Schmitz (1889). In addition, Chaetolithon deformans (Solms-Laubach) Foslie, first described as Melobesia deformans Solms-Laubach (1881: 53, 57), is considered to be heterotypic synonym of Choreonema thuretii (Bornet) Schmitz, first described as Melobesia thuretii Bornet in Thuret & Bornet (1878: 96).

Contributors
Some of the descriptions included in AlgaeBase were originally from the unpublished Encyclopedia of Algal Genera, organised in the 1990s by Dr Bruce Parker on behalf of the Phycological Society of America (PSA) and intended to be published in CD format. These AlgaeBase descriptions are now being continually updated, and each current contributor is identified above. The PSA and AlgaeBase warmly acknowledge the generosity of all past and present contributors and particularly the work of Dr Parker.

Descriptions of chrysophyte genera were subsequently published in J. Kristiansen & H.R. Preisig (eds.). 2001. Encyclopedia of Chrysophyte Genera. Bibliotheca Phycologica 110: 1-260.
