Taxonomic status: currently recognized as a distinct genus.

Description: Cells are spheroidal or ellipsoidal. They are sheathed and nonmotile. The cells contain chl d as a major pigment. Phycobilisomes are absent. Thylakoids are appressed peripherally. Gas vacuole is absent. Reproduction is performed asexually by binary division.

Comments: According to Silva (Index Nominum Algarum), generic name invalid, valid according to bacteriological code.
