Taxonomic notes
According to Burrows (1991) this species is a synonym of Rhizoclonium tortuosum (Dillwyn) Kützing. Guiry (1997) cites this species as a synonym of Rhizoclonium tortuosum; see Burrows (1991). Also noted; Silva, Basson & Moe (1996) regard this as a seperate species. John et al. (2004) cite Rhizoclonium riparium var. implexum (Dillwyn) Rosenv., R. implexum (Dillwyn) Kütz. and Lola implexum (Harv.) Hamel as synonyms of this species. They note that all records of R. implexum and L. implexum are now placed under R. riparium var. implexum, see John et al. (2003).

Nomenclatural notes
Lawson & John (1987) cite this species as Rhizoclonium riparium (Roth) Kützing in Harvey, 1849.
