The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Agarophyton chilense (C.J.Bird, McLachlan et E.C.Oliveira) Gurgel, J.N.Norris et Fredericq

General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Appears to be largely confined to river mouths or estuaries (Womersley 1996: 25). In bays, estuaries or otherwise sheltered environments; intertidal, on bouldrers and rocky outcrops associated with sand beaches, or subtidal to 12 m depth, attached to small stones, anchored in sand, or free-living (Bird et al. 1986).

Type information
Type locality: Penco, southeastern corner of Bahía Concepción, VIIIth Region, Chile (Bird, McLachlan & Oliveira Filho 1986: 2929). Holotype (female): Hector Romo; 1 September 1982; Intertidal. NRCC 9131 (a) (Bird, McLachlan & Oliveira Filho 1986: 2929). Notes: Isotypes: NRCC, 9131b (male), 9131c (tetrasporangial).
