Nomenclatural notes
Asensi & de Reviers (2009: 244) claimed that J. Agardh (1878: 6) did not provide a description of his "Lessonia variegata mscr." and the name was thus invalid. However, this is incorrect: J. Agardh clearly stated, as pointed out by Laing (1894), that his Lessonia variegata was distinguished from other species of the genus by the structure of the fronds ("Species Lessonia non facile characteribus separantur, quare synonymia quam maxime intricata. Species hemisphaerii australis forsan apte in duas sectiones separantur."); this is sufficient to validate the name. Laing (1894) gave a full description based on specimens from Wellington (Cook Strait) and Hokianga, but the name should be attributed solely to J. Agardh and the type is to be found in J. Agardh's herbarium. - (10 Apr 2013) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Syntype localities: Collenso, Lyalls Bay, Cook str, Hokianga (Agardh 1878: 6). Type: LD? Notes: Asensi & de Reviers (2009: 244): "PC 0062745 from the Sauvageau Herbarium, preserved in cabinet 16 is a Syntype, collected by Laing in 1893 and labelled in Robert Malcolm Laing's handwriting. To our knowledge no lectotype has been designated yet." However, a lectotype has to be selected from J. Agardh's materials, so their selection is not valid.
