The type species (holotype) of the genus Macrocystis is Macrocystis pyrifera (Linnaeus) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Phyllospora obtusa (Harvey) Endlicher

Adjective (Latin), obtuse, blunt (Stearn 1973).
