Taxonomic note
This name has been misapplied to dichotomous species of Codium throughout the world. Cormaci, Furnari & Alongi (2014: 241) comment: "The record of this species from Israel (Rayss, 1955), according to Silva (1960: 510) is a misidentification for C. taylorii. All other Mediterranean records, included those re-ported in Gallardo et al. (1993, who erroneously list C. dichotomum among taxa inquirenda as C. dichotomum Stackhouse) should be referred to as C. tomentosum." The name has also been used widely in the Indian Ocean for various species (see Silva, Basson & Moe 1996). Pedroche & al. (2005: 72) write [translated from the Spanish] "The name Codium dichotomum has been applied to a large number of different species. The identity of the specimens on which the record is based for the Mexican Pacific is practically impossible since Dawson does not indicated collection numbers in this publication. We believe that these records may belong to C. simulans." - (15 July 2015) - M.D. Guiry
