Taxonomic note
"S. hypnoides (Bory de Saint-Vincent) Papenfuss [taxon excludendum]. While Papenfuss (1968: 281) considered S. hypnoides as conspecific with S. aculeata, with nomenclatural priority of the former over the latter one, Won et al. (2021: 395) demonstrated that the two species are distinct each other. From a morphological point of view they mainly differ in the basal cell of determinate branches lacking cortication in the intersection point in S. aculeata (corticated in S. hypnoides). Moreover, Won et al. (op. cit.: 400) concluded that all Mediterranean records of S. hypnoides are misidentifications with S. acule-ata. Consequently, S. hypnoides is here considered as a taxon excludendum from the Mediterranean Sea." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 353-4). "It was also recorded with its synonym S. berkeleyana Montagne, a species described from Algeria by Montagne (1846: 141, pl. 15/fig. 6) and already by Ardissone (1883: 193) considered as a probable synonym of S. aculeata." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 356). - (22 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
