Nomenclatural notes
This name, along with some other algal names introduced by Esper, appeared on a mispaginated portion of Part 4 of Esper's "Icones fucorum". The page number given is "148" which should have been page 188 and appeared in 1800 not 1797. This has no bearing on its priority. - (11 Oct 2018) - M.D. Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: Not specified (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 325). Lectotype: HGB (Doty 1988: 188). Notes: Doty (1995: 243) notes that the type material for this species appears to be from an abundance of frond fragments found in the Esper collections housed in the Herbarium of Institut Allgemeine Botanik, Hamburg, Gemany (HGB). A fragment (numbered 34697) in the Agardh Hebarium at the University of Lund, Sweden (LD), appears to have come from thiis Esper collection. Physically, these fragments are poorly preserved but they are accepted as isolectotypes. The specimen illustrated by Doty (1988, fig. 23A) is in the Hamburg herbarium and was selected as the lectotype and the LD specimen is an isolectotype.
