Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Betaphycus gelatinus (Esper) Doty ex P.C.Silva

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: Not specified (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 325). Lectotype: Hamburg Herbarium (Doty 1988: 188). Notes: Doty (1995: 243) notes that the type material for this species appears to be from an abundance of frond fragments found in the Esper collections housed in the Herbarium of Institut Allgemeine Botanik, Hamburg, Gemany. However, a fragment (numbered 34697) in the Agardh Hebarium at the University of Lund, Sweden, appears to have come from thiis Esper collection. Physically, these fragments are poorly preserved but they are accepted as isolectotypes. The specimen illustrated by Doty (1988, fig. 23A) is in the Hamburg herbarium and is selected as the lectotype .
