Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phymatolithon laevigatum (Foslie) Foslie.

Type locality: Helgoland, Germany; (Irvine & Chamberlain 1994: 215) Lectotype: P. Kuckuck; date not indicated; no habitat data on type; TRH; C25-3749; designated by Adey in Adey & lebednik, 1967: 91 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 519) Notes: Paratypes: PC, Thuret-Bornet Herbarium (algal fascicle 132, filed under Phymatolithon); PC, unnumbered, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym). Epilithic on rocks; tetrasporophyte (Jeong et al., 2019: 335).

Adjective (Latin), smooth and polished (Stearn 1973).
