Type locality: Helgoland, Germany (Irvine & Chamberlain 1994: 215). Lectotype: P. Kuckuck; date not indicated; no habitat data on type. TRH C25-3749; designated by Adey in Adey & lebednik, 1967: 91 (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 519). Notes: Paratypes: PC, Thuret-Bornet Herbarium (algal fascicle 132, filed under Phymatolithon); PC, unnumbered, General Herbarium box collection (non-fossil; filed in non-geniculate coralline type collections cabinet under basionym).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), smooth and polished (Stearn 1973).
