Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Amphidinium conradii J.Schiller.

Nomenclatural note
Moestrup & Calado (2018: 147) note, "Gymnodinium glaucum W. Conrad (1926, p. 80, pl. 1, figs 13%u201315), from brackish water in Belgium, is slightly larger, measuring 32-40 µm in length, and in width 15-20 µm (epicone) and 20-26 µm (hypocone). It formed resting stages in which the cells were surrounded by large amounts of mucilage. It is closely related or identical to N. amphidinioides." - (17 October 2018) - M.D. Guiry
