Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Amphidinium is Amphidinium operculatum Claparède & Lachmann.

Nomenclatural note
Moestrup & Calado (2018: 147) note, "Gymnodinium glaucum W. Conrad (1926, p. 80, pl. 1, figs 13-15), from brackish water in Belgium, is slightly larger, measuring 32-40 µm in length, and in width 15-20 µm (epicone) and 20-26 µm (hypocone). It formed resting stages in which the cells were surrounded by large amounts of mucilage. It is closely related or identical to N. amphidinioides."
