Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Bangia is Bangia atropurpurea (Mertens ex Roth) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Bangia fuscopurpurea (Dillwyn) Lyngbye

Nomenclatural notes
