The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cladostephus is Cladostephus spongiosus (Hudson) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Vertebrata australis (C.Agardh) Kuntze.

Type locality: "Ad Novam Hollandiam" (one of three possible localities in Western Australia: Geographe Bay, Cape Leeuwin, or King George Sound; (Silva & al. 1996: 477) Type: Mus. Paris; (Parsons 1980: 278) Notes: Lectotype: (Parsons) PC. Isolectotype: Herb. Agardh, LD, 41993.

Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1973).
