The type species (holotype) of the genus Iridophycus is Iridaea capensis J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mazzaella flaccida (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) Fredericq.

Manza; 18 July 1935; UC; 539561, 547655, 547644 (part of a single gathering) (Hughey & Hommersand 2010: 122) Notes: "Type: UC 547654; Syntypes: 539561, 547655 (male)" (see Abbott, Syesis 4: 64. 1972.).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), flaccid, not able to hold up its own weight (Stearn 1973).
