The type species (holotype) of the genus Iridophycus is Iridaea capensis J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mazzaella flaccida (Setchell & N.L.Gardner) Fredericq.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), flaccid, not able to hold up its own weight (Stearn 1973).
