The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Brongniartella australis (C.Agardh) F.Schmitz

Type locality: "Ad Novam Hollandiam" (one of three possible localities in Western Australia: Geographe Bay, Cape Leeuwin, or King George Sound (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 477). Type: Mus. Paris (Parsons 1980: 278). Notes: Lectotype: (Parsons) PC. Isolectotype: Herb. Agardh, LD, 41993.
