Soft, tufted, deep purplish red fronds, to 300 mm long. Main axis well-defined, bi- or tripinnate, bearing alternate, distichous branches. Branches and branchlets articulated, with central siphon and 5-7 pericentral siphons, clothed with short, slender, repeatedly dichotomously branched, monosiphonous ramuli. Procarps and cystocarps are single on the tricho blasts and the spermatangial branches are grouped together at the tips of short polysiphonous laterals. Tetrasporangia are formed in stichidia-like modifications of the main and lateral axes which carry 3-4 branched trichoblasts. The colour is a light red-brown to almost black when dry.

Habitat
On stones and shells and epiphytic, lower intertidal and subtidal, spring and summer, generally distributed, common in NE Atlantic.
