The type species (holotype) of the genus Ectocarpus is Ectocarpus siliculosus (Dillwyn) Lyngbye.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Phycocelis crouaniorum Athanasiadis

Adjective (Latin), creeping, prostrate and rooting; arching and then rooting (Stearn 1973).
