Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia tenera (Kjellman) N.Kikuchi, M.Miyata, M.S.Hwang & H.G.Choi

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), soft, delicate (Brown 1956).

According to Silva et al. (1996), the name Porphyra umbilicalis f. purpurea has been misapplied to this species by Jadin (1935: 161)
