The type species (holotype) of the genus Halimeda is Halimeda tuna (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Halimeda distorta (Yamada) Hillis-Colinvaux

Halimeda opuntia f. hederacea Barton

Type information
Lectotype locality: Tanah-Djampeah, Flores Sea, Indonesia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 865). Notes: Silva et al. recommend consulting Colinvaux (1968: 32) for further information regarding the type locality of this species.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), ivy-like.
