Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phycocalidia acanthophora (E.C.Oliveira & Coll) Santiañez.

Eponomy
Named for Iemasa Yamada, Otaru University of Commerce, who found that type of Porphyra crispata was referable to Monostroma nitidum.
