Adjective (Latin), entangled, entwined, interwoven, interlaced (Stearn 1973).

Type locality: Habitat in mare mediterraneo [Mediterranean Sea] (Desfontaines 1799: 423). Holotype: PC 0146187 (Tronholm et al. 2010: 1313, fig. 8A). Notes: Tronholm et al. (2010: 1313) select GENT FS 338 as epitype (fig. 8B) as epitype of Dictyota implexa (Desfontaines) Lamouroux.

Synonymy (De Clerck (2003)) follows Papenfuss (1944: 338-339).
