Type locality: Ad vias lapideas Argentorati: A. Braun [Strasbourg] (Kützing 1849: 643). Type: see below (epitype) L 939 67 905 (Silva, Mattox & Blackwell 1972: 643). Notes: According to Lokhorst (1996: 17), the lectotype is annotated as "Strassburg Febr. 1846". leg. A. Braun. (L sheet 939.67-905). Epitype: strain SAG 2307 designated by Mikhailyuk et al. (2015: 762) to support the lectotype above and the authentic strain of K. flaccidum that is permanently preserved in a metabolically inactive state in the SAG.

Adjective (Latin), flaccid, not able to hold up its own weight (Stearn 1973).
