Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Fucus capensis S.G.Gemelin
Type locality: Cape of Good Hope (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 134).
Fucus capensis S.G.Gemelin 1768
Gelidium coarctatum Kützing 1868
According to Silva, Basson & Moe (1996: 135), specimens of this this species from the Indian Ocean have “... usually but incorrectly been called Gelidium cartilagineum (L.) Gaillon or G. versicolor (S. Gmelin) Lamouroux.” Dixon (1967) showed that Fucus cartilagineus Linnaeus (1753: 1161) is referable to Plocamium and considered Fucus versicolor S. Gmelin (1768: 158) the earliest name for this species of Gelidium. However, as shown by P. Silva (in P. Silva, Meñez, & Moe, 1987: 26), F. versicolor is a superfluous [and thus illegitimate] name for Fucus abrotanifolius (Linnaeus, 1753: 1161), which in turn is referable to Cystoseira. The earliest available name is this F. capensis.”
According to Silva et al. (1996: 135), the name Gelidium asperum has been misapplied to this species by several authors; the name Gelidium cartilagineum has been misapplied to this species by several authors; the name Gelidium corneum has been misapplied to this species by Barton (1893: 172 (Krauss record)); the name Gelidium robustum has been misapplied to this species by Stegenga (1988: 383); the name Gelidium versicolor has been misapplied to this species by several authors
