Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Infrageneric classification
Subgenus Sargassum Section Ilicifolium

Nomenclatural notes
Not formally named in 1931 paper; formally described in 1933 paper.

Taxonomic notes
Stiger et al. (2000: 256, 258) note that their results based on ITS-2 sequences comparisons showed that S. mcclurei and S. quinhonense presented little divergence in ITS-2 sequences. In spite of this similarity, they assume that these are two distinct species. See note for S. phyllocystum.

In section Ilicifolium (formerly in section Phyllocystae). - (9 Aug 2010) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: Hong Kong (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 685). Type: US 2222-2224 (: 901). Notes: Repulse Bay, Hong Kong (Matteo et al. 2010: 901).
