The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), moniliform, cylindrical but contracted at regular intervals like a string of beads (Stearn 1973).

This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: ‘aus der Südsee’, (probably southern coast of Australia) (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 646). Holotype: R. Brown; ER (Womersley 1987: 370). Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Womersley (1964: 71-72) for more information on the type locality of this species. Womersley (1987: 370) cites the "south seas" (south coast of Australia) as the type locality.
