The type species (lectotype) of the genus Fucus is Fucus vesiculosus Linnaeus.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Cystoseira barbata (Stackhouse) C.Agardh

Type information
Type locality: Devon, England (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 647).

Nomenclatural notes
Roberts (1968: 257-258) gave reasons for considering Fucus barbatus Goodenough & Woodward a new species rather than a redescription of F. barbatus Linnaeus (1753: 1161; type locality: 'Oceano'), even though she thought that the two names apply to the same species. When F. barbatus Goodenough & Woodward is interpreted as a later homonym, it is not priorable, and Abrotanifolia barbata Stackhouse, intended to be a new combination, is treated as a new name in accordance with Art. 58.3 (Silva, Basson & Moe 1966). - (26 Jul 2006) - Wendy Guiry
