The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota paniculata J.Agardh.

Type locality: Western Australia; (Silva & al. 1996: 601) Holotype: MEL; 17190 (De Clerck 2003: 185) Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Womersley (1967: 216) for more information on the type locality of this species.

Adjective (Latin), smaller, inferior, lesser (Stearn 1973).
